it is hard to say all the cons and pros of each in a short time.
in summary, Java (J2EE) is good for so called "enterprise" projects which
require high level security, stability, maintainability and easy to be
deployed to already invested middleware, like SAP, JBoss, Oracle Application
Server, or WebLogic etc. it is relatively slow to develop such projects.
for others, django/python is the way to go for web applications, if your
authority allows you to use it.
ruby on rails is very good to start with too, however, as its language is
still not stable enough, it has serious performance and stability issues
when a project grows, as far as I know.
