The router has locked up on me twice today and the logs have been different each time. I'm guessing the log resets itself after each reboot. The current log has several "smurf attack detect" entries and several DHCP Requests. I'm really ignorant on a lot of this networking stuff, but I believe the DHCP has something to do with the IP addresses that are assigned to each computer? Each DHCP Request is coming from my WAN's IP address on port 199 and some of the messages in the log say "DHCP Request Success". I'm still wondering if these lockups could be caused by my modem. It uses the same 192.168.0.1 address deal to log into it and configure like the router. Maybe there is something on the modem that needs to be configured? If so, I would not know what that would be. I've disabled the wireless function on the router to see if it is indeed interference causing the problem or something else on my computer. Although I don't know if doing that would stop the interference. Thanks for all your help so far. |

Oh, of course!! Okay, a smurf attack is a denial-of-service ICMP Echo Response attack where the IP address of the sender is spoofed. Well, in your case, this makes total sense because there are two 192.168.0.1s on your network!!! Change your Home / LAN address to 192.168.(1-254).1 and the smurf attacks should stop. It may also stabalize your network (it definitely won't hurt it). After making that change, reboot your network computers so that they can automatically obtain their new addresses. Any systems that you have manually configured will have to be manually configured to the new subnet (1-254) that you selected. Your Speedstream 5100 may have a "Bridge Mode," which -- if it does -- is another option. You can search the forum for more information. |
